Merano è un comune di 35.119 (2004) abitanti della Provincia Autonoma di Bolzano. Merano è una città termale, capoluogo della Comunità comprensoriale del Burgraviato. Ha poco più di 35.000 abitanti, per metà di madrelingua tedesca e per metà di madrelingua italiana. Attraversata dal fiume Passirio che confluisce nell'Adige, è alle pendici del Gruppo Tessa (fino a 3.840 m.s.l.m., confine con l'Austria) e dell'Altopiano del Salto (fino a 2.800). Alla periferia di Merano si trovano il villaggio e il castello di Tirolo (Dorf Tirol, Schloß Tirol) da cui prende nome la regione
