Hotels in Venice Italy: Hotel Reviews from Budget to Luxury

See our recommendations for hotels in Venice, Italy. Venice accommodation can range from the ultimate luxurious to more humble quarters for students and budget travelers. These are travel reviews made by people who have stayed there. For those of you who have never been to Venice, you haven't lived! Venice is one of those 'must see' places before you die!

Hotel Prices are According to Location

the scene outside our hotel window of a small canal in Venice, Italy Prices of hotels here really depend on the quality of the hotel you choose as well as the location, but in the main they are notoriously expensive.

If you are looking for a hotel room overlooking the
Grand Canal be prepared to dig deep. This is prime real estate, and as such, you will pay top dollar for the privilege.

On the other hand, you can find hotels on minor canals at half the price and still have the canal experience of watching the Venetians as they go about their daily lives in this water-locked, 1500 year-old city.

Another tip to consider when booking hotels in Venice is that the closer they are to St. Mark's Square (San Marco) the more expensive your rooms will be as this is the main area that people flock to when visiting Venice.

What you will have to consider if you book cheaper rooms in less popular areas of the island is how much it will cost you to travel to the places you want to see as the water taxis or vaporetta are also not cheap. This is when you should invest in the Venice Tourist Card.

The ideal place to book is one where you can walk comfortably to all the top attractions and destinations, pay a reasonable price for the room, have a nice view and only pay for transport on the rare occasion.

Budget Hotels in Venice Italy

If you are looking for backpacking, budget accommodation in Venice, then head for the station area. It is a little out of the way, in fact it is right at the top end of the city, and will involve a lot of traveling and walking to get to where you probably want to be, but your accommodation will cost a lot less here than anywhere else.

Other cheaper options with a better class of hotel can be found in Cannaregio, Castello and Dorsoduro.  The cheapest out of the three is Dorsoduro which is home to wealthy Venetians and expatriates who enjoy the large expanses of land here that are not cut up by canals and is a great place for walking. Cannaregio is very easy to get from place to place and was home to the Jewish ghetto. It is very easy to get from here to the Rialto Bridge area. Castello is an interesting mix of working-class Venetians, traditional fishermen of San Pietro and backwater canals.

Travel to Venice out of Season for Cheaper Hotel Rooms

Another option to getting a cheaper room is to travel out of season during the winter months. I have visited Venice in both the height of the summer and the winter, and have to confess that I found Venice charming in the winter. It was far less touristy, I didn't have to queue to get into the  Basilica in St. Mark's Square and other attractions, and I was also able to get a hotel just off the Grand Canal , overlooking a minor canal with a great location at half the price I would have paid had I been there in season.
